Join the PackWhat is Cub Scouts?
Cub Scouts is a program of Scouting America (formerly the Boy Scouts of America) for kids in kindergarten through 5th grade. Through hands-on activities, outdoor adventures, and service projects, kids build confidence, make friends, and learn practical skills, all while having a lot of fun.
Open to Everyone
Boys and girls in kindergarten through 5th grade (roughly ages 5–10). No prior experience is needed.
Hands-On Adventures
Hiking, camping, crafts, science projects, community service, the Pinewood Derby, outdoor cooking, and skills like first aid and knot tying.
Earn Your Rank
Scouts earn adventure loops and pins as they complete activities, working toward their rank for the year.
What is a Pack Meeting?
The pack is all of our dens together. While dens meet on their own for most activities, the whole pack gets together for bigger meetings and events.
- When
- About once a month to every other month
- Where
- Deer Hill School
- Who
- Every den, every grade, and their families
What is a Den Meeting?
Kids are grouped into small dens of about 5–8 scouts in the same grade. Dens are coed and led by volunteer parents. We organize by grade as much as possible, but may mix ages for grades one to two years apart.
Since each den is a small group, families coordinate on a meeting time that works for everyone. Each grade has its own rank:
- Lions Kindergarten
- Tigers 1st grade
- Wolves 2nd grade
- Bears 3rd grade
- Webelos 4th grade
- Arrow of Light 5th grade
- When
- About an hour, weekly or every other week
- Where
- A family’s home, a school, or a local community space
- Who
- 5–8 scouts from the same grade and their den leaders
Frequently Asked Questions
Is it coed?
Yes! Cub Scouts welcomes both boys and girls. We’re organizing coed dens by age and grade.
Do parents have to be involved?
Cub Scouts is a family program, and parent involvement is part of what makes it work. For younger scouts (Lions and Tigers), an adult partner attends meetings with their child. Dens are led by volunteer parents, and we’ll provide training and support. You don’t need any scouting experience to help out.
How much does it cost?
The total cost is about $200 to join Cub Scouts, but we don’t want this to stop anyone from joining. There will be additional costs for events put on by the den and pack at large.
Is there a uniform?
Yes. Scouts wear a uniform to meetings and events, which includes a shirt and rank-specific items like a neckerchief or cap. We’ll share more details when you join.
Do we have to go camping?
Camping is optional but a highlight for many families. Cub Scout camping is family-focused, with parents and siblings often joining.
How much time does it take?
Typically a den meeting of about an hour weekly or every other week, a pack meeting about once a month, and a few optional weekend events throughout the year.
What about safety?
Scouting America requires all adult volunteers to complete Youth Protection training and background checks. Two-deep leadership (at least two adults present) is required at all scouting activities.
Can my child join mid-year?
Yes! Kids can join at any time. We’ll help them get caught up and placed in a den.
Can siblings come to events?
Siblings are welcome at most pack events and family activities.
